flies pest control sydneyFlies Information :
* Three body parts: head, thorax, abdomen

* One pair of fully developed wings

* Hind wings are reduced to halteres (small knob-like structures) used to maintain equilibrium.

* Adult mouth parts are sponging, lapping, or piercing

* All adults look like flies, but some may have a metallic color (blue bottle fly).

* Antennae may be difficult to see. The fly is an order with very well defined characteristics - the chief one being a single pair of wings. The adult fly emerges from the pupa soft and crumpled with a colourless skin (integument) and perfectly formed (though not fully pigmented) hairs and bristles. The newly emergent adult swallows air to expand its body and wings and to force blood through its body .

  • Blow fly
  • Lesser house fly

  • Flesh fly

Size:
2 cm in length

Behavior:
* The eyes of flies are among the most complex in the insect world. They are compound eyes with many individual facets, each representing a separate light-detecting unit. The light reflected from the eye of a horsefly can form a rainbow.

* Flies taste, smell, and feel with the hairs that cover their bodies. The hairs on the fly's mouth parts and feet are used for tasting. Flies taste what they walk on. If they walk onto something tasty, they put down their mouth and taste it again.

* Flies use other hairs to tell them when they touch something. These hairs bend when touched.

* The eyes of a fly do not have eyelids, so flies rub their eyes with their feet to keep them clean.

* A fly cleans itself constantly.

* Flies walk on smooth surfaces using sticky soft pads that act like glue. This allows them to walk on vertical glass surfaces and upside down. .

Habitat: Back To Top
Flies live in garbage and wherever animal feces are available. Dead animals attract flies within hours after death. Most flies are diurnal. .
Flies Symptoms:
Flies can produce an array of symptoms including pain, itching, urticaria and cellulitis. An allergic response is the most common, which imay be characterised by hives, and in some cases wheezing. Tabanid bites are very painful, with some individuals developing severe lesions, fever and general disability. This allergic response is due to the large amounts of saliva injected by the fly to prevent their blood meal from clotting.
Health Concerns:
Flies are widespread throughout the warmer parts of Australia and will attack humans, livestock and domestic pets to acquire blood. The flies are stoutly built and are strong swift fliers that tend to be more active throughout the summer months especially in still, open sunny areas. The Tabanids, especially, are influenced by weather and will respond to changes in barometric pressure, wind, cloud cover and temperature. .
