Mosquitoes Information :Mosquito (from the Spanish meaning little fly is a common insect in the family Culicidae (from the Latin culex meaning midge or gnat. Mosquitoes resemble crane flies (family Tipulidae) and chironomid flies (family Chironomidae), with which they are sometimes confused by the casual observer.
Mosquitoes go through four stages in their life-cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult or imago. Adult females lay their eggs in water, which can be a salt-marsh, a lake, a puddle, a natural reservoir on a plant, or an artificial water container such as a plastic bucket. The first three stages are aquatic and last 5–14 days, depending on the species and the ambient temperature; eggs hatch to become larvae, then pupae. The adult mosquito emerges from the pupa as it floats at the water surface. Adults live for 4–8 weeks.
Mosquitoes have mouthparts that are adapted for piercing the skin of plants and animals. While males typically feed on nectar and plant juices, the female needs to obtain nutrients from a "blood meal" before she can produce eggs.
There are about 3,500 species of mosquitoes found throughout the world. In some species of mosquito, the females feed on humans, and are therefore vectors for a number of infectious diseases affecting millions of people per year.

Size:
about 2 to 5 centimeters
Behavior:
Mosquitoes exhibit holometabolous metamorphosis and, therefore, have a life cycle consisting of egg, larvae, pupae, and adult. Adult female culicids feed according to their state in the gonotrophic cycle. Following oviposition, the mosquito will seek a blood meal. Blood ingestion begins and continues until
stretch receptors in the abdomen signal that she can't hold anymore. This is referred to as Distention-
induced Host-seeking Inhibition. Blood is then digested and egg maturation begins. Host-seeking is then
further inhibited in Oocyte-induced Host-seeking Inhibit. Variations in the cycle occur in mosquito species which
blood feed more than once during egg maturation. Vertebrate blood contains essential proteins necessary
for eggs to mature. Egg production is dependent upon amino acids and does not require the presence of
other constituents in the blood. Feeding is also dependent upon the circadian rhythms of the specific mosquito species. |

Mosquitoes live around water. Various species breed and make their homes in the following areas:
Salt Marshes
Coastal salt marshes serve as breeding ground for several species of mosquitoes. Areas such as depressions and neglected ditches can breed millions of mosquitoes during the course of a summer. These mosquitoes can be effectively controlled through Open Marsh Water Management practices.
Freshwater Marshes
Specific species of mosquitoes are born in freshwater marshes. The larvae attach themselves to the stems and roots of the vegetation to obtain oxygen, and to acquire a certain amount of protection from predatory fish.
Temporary Woodland Pools
Shallow pools are common in wooded areas during the spring and wet summers. Various mosquito species will breed in this environment. They lay their eggs along the edges of the pools formed by rainwater.
Roadside Ditches
Roadside ditches are common habitats for many species of mosquitoes and ditches that hold water for extended periods of time become a breeding ground.
Freshwater Ponds
Some mosquito larvae is found primarily in small ponds where vegetated growth accommodates breeding.
Running Water
Streams with running water produce few, if any, mosquitoes. However, mosquitoes are sometimes found in isolated pockets of calm water away from the main flow of the stream.
Artificial Containers
Artificial containers like tires, buckets and gutters provide an ideal habitat for mosquitoes. Therefore, in order to keep the area around your home mosquito-free, all items collecting rainwater should be tipped over, removed or cleaned regularly. |

Mosquito prefer some people over others. The preferential victim's sweat simply smells better than others because of the proportions of the carbon dioxide, octenol and other compounds that make up body odour . The powerful semiochemical that triggers the mosquito's keen sense of smell is Nonanal. A large part of the mosquito’s sense of smell, or olfactory system, is devoted to sniffing out human targets. Of 72 types of odour receptor on its antennae, at least 27 are tuned to detect chemicals found in perspiration.
Visible, irritating bites are due to an immune response from the binding of IgG and IgE antibodies to antigens in the mosquito's saliva. Some of the sensitizing antigens are common to all mosquito species, whereas others are specific to certain species. There are both immediate hypersensitivity reactions and delayed hypersensitivity reactions to mosquito bites. |

Mosquitoes are a vector agent that carries disease-causing viruses and parasites from person to person without catching the disease themselves.
The principal mosquito borne diseases are the viral diseases yellow fever, dengue fever and Chikungunya, transmitted mostly by the Aedes aegypti, and malaria carried by the genus Anopheles.
Mosquitoes are estimated to transmit disease to more than 700 million people annually in Africa, South America, Central America, Mexico and much of Asia with millions of resulting deaths. At least 2 million people annually die of these diseases.
Methods used to prevent the spread of disease, or to protect individuals in areas where disease is endemic include Vector control aimed at mosquito eradication, disease prevention, using prophylactic drugs and developing vaccines and prevention of mosquito bites, with insecticides, nets and repellents. Since most such diseases are carried by "elderly" females, scientists have suggested focusing on these to avoid the evolution of resistance.
Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes include Dengue fever, Australian encephalitis, Ross River virus disease and Barmah Forerst virus disease. Dengue is the most important viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes afflicting humans in a world context. Clinical symptoms range from mild fevers, to a severe and potentially life threatening haemorrhagic disease. "Australian encephalitis" (AE), or "Murray Valley encephalitis" are synonyms for a clinical syndrome caused by infection with Murray Valley encephalitis virus or Kunjin virus. Symptoms are variable, from mild to severe with permanent impaired neurological functions, to sometimes fatal.A wide variety of symptoms may occur from rashes with fevers, to arthritis that can last from months to years with RR virus infection. RR disease is the most commonly reported mosquito transmitted disease to humans and occurs in all states of Australia. Malaria in Australia has been endemic. |
