Silverfish Information :
Silverfish are nocturnal, elongate, and flattened insects .Their abdomen tapers at the end, giving them a fish-like appearance. They are born whitish, but develop a grayish hue and metallic shine as they get older. They have three long cerci at the tips of their abdomens, one parallel to their body, one facing left, and one facing right. They also have two small compound eyes, despite other members of Thysanura being completely eyeless, such as the family Nicoletiidae.
Like other species in Apterygota, silverfish completely lack wings. They have long antennae, and move in a wiggling motion that resembles the movement of a fish. This, coupled with their appearance, influences their common name. Silverfish typically live for two to eight years.
|
Size:
typically between 0.5 and 1.0 inches (12-25 mm) in length
Behavior:
The reproduction of silverfish is preceded by a ritual involving three phases, which may last over half an hour. In the first phase, the male and female stand face to face, their trembling antennae touching, then repeatedly back off and return to this position. In the second phase the male runs away and the female chases him. In the third phase the male and female stand side by side and head-to-tail, with the male vibrating his tail against the female. Finally the male lays a spermatophore, a sperm capsule covered in gossamer, which the female takes into her body via her ovipositor to fertilize the eggs.
The female lays groups of less than fifty eggs at once, deposited in small crevices. The eggs are oval-shaped, whitish, about 1/32 inches (0.79 mm) long, and take between two weeks and two months to hatch. Silverfish usually lay fewer than one hundred eggs in their lifetime.
When the nymphs hatch, they are whitish in color, and look like smaller adults. As they molt, young silverfish develop a grayish appearance and a metallic shine, eventually becoming adults after three months to three years. They may go through seventeen to sixty-six molts in their lifetime, sometimes thirty in a single year, which is much more than usual for an insect. Silverfish are one of the rare species of insect that continue to molt after mating.

| Habitat: |
| Silverfish are pests in households around the world and they prefer warm, humid environments. They like to shelter in small, dark hiding places, such as inside cupboards, bookcases and storage boxes. We often find silverfish in our sinks and bath tubs - they cannot climb up the slippery sides and become stranded there. |
| Silverfish Symptoms: |
| Silverfish consume matter that contains polysaccharides, such as starches and dextrin in adhesives. These include glue, book bindings, paper, photos, sugar, coffee, hair, carpet, clothing and dandruff. Silverfish can also cause damage to books and tapestries. Other substances that may be eaten include cotton, linen, silk and synthetic fibres, and dead insects or even its own exuvia (moulted exoskeleton). During famine, a silverfish may even attack leatherware and synthetic fabrics. Silverfish can live for a year or more without eating.
Silverfish are found in basements, kitchens, sinks, bathtubs, in bookcases, on closet shelves, behind baseboards, wallpaper, window or door frames, wall voids, and sub-floor areas.
Because they molt during their adult lives their cast skins may be a useful detection too.
Silverfish diets are high in protein, sugar, or starch, including cereals,
moist wheat flour, starch in book bindings, and paper on which there is glue or paste.
Silverfish can damage book bindings, wallpaper, paper goods and dry foods. They may eat holes, irregular shaped in the wallpaper to get to the paste.
Silverfish may bite very small holes in various fabrics, including cotton, linen, and silk, even though they cannot digest either linen or cotton.
Firebrats will feed extensively on rayon, whereas silverfish usually damage it only slightly.
They may leave a yellowish stain on fabric.
Outside, they may be found in nest of insects, birds, mammals, and under tree bark and mulch
They can be found in wood shingles or sidings on houses, they may enter the home from these.

| Health Concerns: |
| Silverfish are considered a household pest, due to their consumption and destruction of property. While responsible for the contamination of food and other types of damage, they do not transmit disease. |
